Young people to launch new youth organisation in Medway tomorrow , with a celebration of Youth talent !

Young people from Medway African and Caribbean Association , who come from a wide range of racial backgrounds, will launch a new youth organisation this weekend called Young People United ( YPU).

The young people applied for funding from Starbucks Youth Action and UK Youth, with the aim of organising an event to bring groups of young people together from different diverse backgrounds, and to showcase talent, to help break down barriers amongst young people

The Young people aged 16-25 from Medway have had support from Mid Kent College, who are hosting the event, Medway Council Youth Service, Medway Council Youth Arts team, Medway African and Caribbean Association, Delta to Delta , Medway Youth Trust and Dickens World

There will be a display of local youth talent, and amongst the workshops will be a dance workshop by Wolfgang, who is a dancer with Little Mix , Rita Ora and Rhianna, and a script writing and drama workshop with Natalie Mitchell who is a script writer for Eastenders and Jane Fallowfield

 

Safiya Stewart, from YPU said, “we are really looking forward to this event, the team has worked really hard over the past few months, we were really pleased to receive the funding from Satrbucks, it was our first time applying for funding, and our first time organising an event. We hope that it is going to be the first of many, and we have lots of plans for the future “

 

Carol Stewart Chairperson Maca: ” We are really proud of the young people, many of whom have grown up through the association, and are now emerging as leaders. I was very encouraged to see the involvement of young people from different backgrounds, as MACA is very keen to encourage all communities to learn from each other.”

 

Councillor Mike O Brien, Lead Member   for Children’s Services, Medway Council, ” I am really pleased to see young people being so enterprising in Medway, I can see that they have worked really hard to put this event together, this is an excellent example of young people from different backgrounds working in partnership, and developing skills for life. Im looking forward to being at the event “

 

 

Adriana Temali-Smith, Diversity Adviser at MidKent College said, “MACA have been long-time partners of MidKent College and we are pleased to be involved in supporting Safiya with the launch of Young People United. We recognise the diversity of the Medway Towns and are encouraged by the kindness and inclusiveness of the younger generations we see here at MidKent College, and I think this event is an outstanding example of both youth civic engagement and the positive impact diversity has on our community. Well done to Safiya and her team for this tremendous achievement.”
