Medway Matters

Jobs and businesses in Medway are to be boosted as Rochester Airport is granted Enterprise Zone status.

The news announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in his Autumn Statement provides a springboard for the airfield site to flourish into a hub for high-tech businesses and as a result, provide up to 1,000 new jobs.

Rochester airport is part of the wider North Kent bid which was submitted to Government on behalf of the partners, Medway Council, Ebbsfleet Development Corporation, Maidstone Borough Council and other stakeholders, by the South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SE LEP) and Thames Gateway Kent Partnership.

The partnership,  known as The North Kent Innovation Zone, links proposals for new commercial development in Ebbsfleet Garden City, Kent Medical Campus at Maidstone, and what will be known as Rochester Airport Technology Park here in Medway.

Rochester Airport is owned by Medway Council and is a vital part of Medway’s future economic prosperity. The authority wants the airport and adjoining land to provide a strategic gateway to Medway as well as being a vital economic hub.

Cllr Alan Jarrett, Leader of Medway Council, said: “I am delighted that Rochester Airport is set to form part of the new North Kent Enterprise Zone.

“We now have the opportunity to attract more high-tech businesses into Medway and capitalise on the excellent location Rochester Airport provides, working alongside BAE and the University of Greenwich.

“Not only will we now look at the creation of up to 1,000 jobs, we have the chance to establish Medway as a centre of excellence for engineering, innovation and technology. Medway will become an economic location of real significance.”

The North Kent Innovation Zone, one of 18 announced by George Osborne on Wednesday, will deliver around 230,000m2 of high quality business premises over nearly 64 hectares of land.
