Warning of action where necessary after Key Stage 2 results

Councillor Mike O’Brien, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, said he would take appropriate action where necessary following the publication of Key Stage 2 provisional results today.

Cllr O’Brien said: “There have been huge variations in Key Stage 2 results this year and there is not one common reason why this has happened.

“We are looking carefully at the results from each of our schools and the academies and where appropriate we are taking action which could include:

An accelerated Year 6 programme where we will bring in some of our best teachers to poor performing schools to speed up learning
Referring academies that under-achieve to the regional schools commissioner
Issue warning notices to governing bodies so they tell us exactly what they are going to do to improve the situation
“We are recruiting good teachers from London and across the country to Medway.

“We are also providing training to ensure we have the highest calibre governors to effectively lead our schools and are leading a project to get volunteers into schools to help children with their reading.

“We have high aspirations for our children and we will do our upmost to ensure that schools give them the very best start in life.”
