Medway University Technical College starts to take shape

I was pleased to join the Leader of Medway Council Councillor Rodney Chambers OBE , the Mayor of Medway Councillor Barry Kemp and the Principal of the Medway UTC Dr Karon Buck this morning for the laying of the first steel as construction is underway at Chatham Waters today.

Also present were officials from the Department of Education and the Education Funding Agency, along with the Contractors.

Medway UTC will provide a new, inspiring and aspirational addition to the educational landscape of Medway and the surrounding area. Its students will develop the skills that employers demand and will gain the qualifications, knowledge and understanding that higher education and FE are looking for. As a result they will be the students, apprentices and employees of choice.

Medway UTC is a new secondary school opening in September 2015, which will specialise in Construction and Engineering alongside a traditional curriculum. The new build school will be located on the Chatham Waters regeneration site in Chatham Maritime, Kent.

The University Technical College, based in Chatham Maritime, is a new type of school for 14 – 19 year olds who want to lay strong career foundations in two of the most important industries worldwide. Students will receive hands-on, practical tuition in engineering and construction, with a focus on design technologies, alongside traditional academic studies.

The photograph above shows us at the site today with Dr Karon Buck and the Mayor of Medway tightening the bolts on the first steel.
