Photo of a family taking part in the Medway MileMedway’s Festival of Sport programme for 2013 promises to be the biggest yet offering a wide range of events for all ages.

The programme this year runs from mid-May to the end of July and includes community competitions, mass participation events and a world cup.

The Festival of Sport launches on Saturday, 18 May with an open leisure weekend offering a wide range of free activities at Medway Council’s leisure centres.

The Festival ends on Friday, 26 July in Rochester with the return of the Medway Mile.  Now in its seventh year, the race will once again weave its way through historic Rochester taking in the cathedral, the city wall and castle.

Wheelchair rugby league action from the England v France test match held at Medway Park Runners fancying a tougher challenge this year will be able to enter the Medway 10km race on Sunday, 23 June. The route, a little over six miles, takes in the Great Lines Heritage Park, Fort Amherst, Gillingham town centre and surrounding areas.

Medway’s Mini Youth Games series for primary schools reaches its climax during the festival with a football event in May, a kwik cricket tournament in June and a district athletics meeting in July. Photo of the England crowd at Medway Park during the England v France test match

The second Medway River Festival on Saturday, 6 July will showcase the many riverside pursuits and pastimes. The following week the world’s best teams take to the court at Medway Park to compete for the Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup.

Hosts England will be aiming to defend their crown in front of a packed Medway crowd. Tickets for all world cup matches go on sale soon.

There will be opportunities to try wheelchair rugby league during the world cup and a day dedicated to disability sport at Medway Park will bring many more opportunities to anyone wanting to get involved.
