Two people will have to part with three hundred pounds each as a result of their decision to drop litter in Medway.

In separate cases heard by Medway Magistrates, Lyndon Knight, from Chatham, and Sonia Ring, from Gillingham, were found guilty of littering.

In October last year Knight was seen dropping a cigarette butt in Chatham High Street. He failed to pay a fixed penalty notice. He pleaded guilty in front of the Magistrates and was fined £100, ordered to pay costs of £180 and a £20 victim surcharge.

In the same month Ring was caught dropping a cigarette butt in High Street, Gillingham. She also failed to pay a fixed penalty notice. She pleaded guilty in court and was fined £100, ordered to pay costs of £180 and a £20 victim surcharge.

Cllr Mike O’Brien, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services and Customer Contact said: “We have a zero tolerance approach to littering and will prosecute anyone who contributes towards spoiling the streets of Medway.

“Almost three million pounds of public money is spent every year clearing up after people who drop their litter instead of using a bin.”
