Mike meets Medway Youth Offending Team and Partners

I had the pleasure of attending a Medway Youth Offending Team presentation evening last night at the St George’s Centre in Medway.

Medway YOT have been extremely successful in dramatically reducing the number of young people entering into the Justice system by utilising in partnership with Medway Police their Triage system.

One of the big challenges facing society is that of of reoffending and we were able to discuss this issue with three young men who are currently looking forward to their discharge for the Young Offenders Institute at Cookham Wood.

When discussing the issue of Youth Offending, it is worth remembering that of the 28,000 10 to 17 year olds in Medway, the YOT team are only working with 180. A very small minority!

The Youth Offending Team is a multi-agency team the works to prevent youth offending, recidivism and incarceraton. YOTs were formed by the Crime and Disorder Act of 1998 as part of an effort to make the youth justice system more effective and efficient.

They work with young people between the ages of 10 and 17.

The Medway YOT is part of the Medway Community Safety Partnership
