Mike reports on Medway’s Tobacco Control Alliance

Do you know that 363,620 illicit cigarettes and153.6 kilos of illicit tobacco with a duty value of £135,000 has been seized in a joint operation by the Council’s Public Health team?

Or that under our new Smokefree Play scheme we installed new ‘Please don’t smoke in our play area’ signs in 80 outdoor play areas?

Last week I introduced an update at Cabinet on the work the Council, along with its partners including theCommunity Safety Partnership and NHS, are doing to control tobacco in Medway – the full report can be read here.

I chair the Tobacco Control Alliance which works to tackle illegal supply, tobacco related litter and encourage a more smokefree environment.

With around 22.2% of adults smoking in Medway, it is very much a minority activity. Whilst there will always be those who wish to continue to smoke, it is important to help those who wish to give it up and ensure that the dangers of second hand smoke are well known and recognised.

The report shows that a number of things are planned this year including the Smokefree Sports 2012, which will tie in with the Olympics and encourage adults to be smoke free role models to our children.
