Southern Gas Networks will shortly be resuming work to upgrade the local gas supply network inHigh Street,Newington.

As you may be aware, we began our project to replace the existing iron gas mains and services with durable plastic (polyethylene) in this area last autumn. To complete the work, which is designed to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply for decades to come, we now need to renew our pipes in the High Street and will start this work from 2 April 2012. It is estimated this will take three weeks.

The scale and extent of the project and the large diameter of the pipes require heavy plant and equipment to be used. To allow room for manoeuvre of this equipment and to ensure everyone’s safety, it will be necessary to close the High Street in both directions between the junctions of Wickham Close andStation Roadduring the three-week period.

A signed diversion will be in place. This will take eastbound traffic onto the A278 and then the M2. Motorists should leave the M2 at junction five, and take the A249 which will lead back onto the A2 and intoNewington. The reverse route applies for westbound traffic.

A separate diversion will be in place for non-motorway motorists. Eastbound traffic should take the A230, the A229,Peneden Heath Road, the A249 and then the A2. The reverse route applies for westbound traffic.

Bus stops in these roads will be suspended where necessary. The location of temporary bus stops will be communicated on advanced warning signs. The work will be undertaken in one phase, as outlined in the map overleaf.

We have been working closely with Kent County Council’s Highways & Transportation and the emergency services to plan this project in such a way to keep disruption to residents, businesses and road users to a minimum, while meeting emergency access and pedestrian safety requirements.

Advance warning and diversionary signs will be in place, while access to homes and businesses will be maintained. Local businesses who feel their trade maybe affected by this essential works can acquire a small business compensation pack from our website, www.sgn.co.uk under the Major Projects section.

I would like to apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused by our work, which forms part of our ongoing gas mains replacement programme developed with the Health and Safety Executive.
