Joint Partnership working on Scrap Metal Dealers

8am and I am at Medway Police Station for the briefing for the Operation Discard a National Scrap Metal exercise carried out in partnership with Kent Police, British Transport Police, Medway Council and Energy Companies.

Around 15 Police Officers joined us as we set off to inspect various Scrap Metal yards throughout Medway. Splitting up in to teams we visited the sites as quickly as possible before word spread about our work.

I had the opportunity to look over a large scrap metal yard where we inspected books, receipts and of metal in the containers. I am pictured with a skip full of copper piping which all had the correct paperwork.

It does seem to me that Government needs to work towards ensuring that Scrap Yards only deal with cheques and not cash if we are to stamp out the theft of copper wire from telecommunications and lead from our Church and School roofs.

After visiting the Scrap Yards it was out in the Police vans to stop and search the various Scrap Metal vans and lorries driving around Medway.

Ensuring that paperwork was in order and inspecting the contents.

I was impressed with the close Partnership working between Medway Council ,Kent and Medway Police and British Transport Police.

A bitterly cold day but interesting meeting the drivers of the scrap lorries and pleased to participating an exercise that Medway continues to be a safe place in which to live, work and play.
